Wegovy: understanding the context

Developed by Novo Nordisk, Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that acts on satiety and food intake. Known for its weekly injectable presentation, it is now also available as daily tablets. The EMA describes both forms in its European dossier [1].

Adoption will nevertheless depend on prescribing, tolerability, affordability and continuity of supply. Commercial success remains a prospect, not a certainty.

Clinical results in context

In the OASIS 4 trial, involving 307 adults without type 2 diabetes over 64 weeks, the publication reports a mean weight reduction of 13.6% with oral semaglutide 25 mg, versus 2.2% with placebo, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity [4]. These averages do not predict individual outcomes.

Counselling remains essential in the pharmacy

Oral administration has specific requirements: on an empty stomach following a recommended fast of at least eight hours, swallowing the tablet whole with no more than 120 mL of water, then waiting thirty minutes before food, drinks or other oral medicines [2].
